In the hearth of The “Porfiriato”, a man dressed up to fool and rob from the rich and powerful regime of Mexican society.

The brief story of “Chucho el Roto”

The people were making speculation about the origin of some robberies that left no trace. “Chucho el Roto” did not steal until he had everything mathematically arranged. Nobody suspected of him because of his wit, he made friendship with his victims. People say he always stole from the rich and was charitable with the truly needed; just like he never hurt nor assassin anyone.
The story tells us that “Jesús Arriaga” after living in Europe, decided to come to Mexico in order to make front to a huge debt his father had aquire. When he came back he couldn’t find a way to get the money, just by stealing. So he decided to steal and mug the roads between Hidalgo, Guanajuato and Queretaro basically.

To win the trust of his victims, Jesús Arriaga, always dressed up fancy as a beautiful woman or as politician. He was well mannered from his European education and expressions from a higher social status in Mexico in the late century XIX called “Rotos”, what gave him the alias of “Chucho el Roto”.

Saldarriaga’s Town is linked to the story of “Chucho el Roto”. As is was the place where Jesus Arriaga lived and during this time, he helped the community to grow and with their needs. According to Saldarriaga’s people, the town was named after Arriaga and the account he paid.

His generosity was great, the thief friends of the poor, that used the money to support the needy. For many people is an honor to carry the name of that famous character.
